How to Stop Your Dog From Chewing

How to stop your dog from chewing is a common question when it comes to dog behavior problems. Your dog might be chewing your furniture, clothing, carpet, shoes, pillows, magazines, or other items.

Dog chewing is a common dog problem simply because chewing is a normal activity for many dogs, especially when they’re puppies. But, it’s a dog problem behavior that should be discouraged because of its destructiveness.

Here are six suggestions on how to stop your dog from chewing:

1. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise. Your dog could be chewing your belongings simply because it’s bored.

If your dog is tired out from exercise, he | she is less likely to look for something to chew.

2. Don’t leave things around that can be chewed. If necessary, cordon off a safe area together with appropriate chew toys, treats, and water.

Things like shoes, shirts, slippers shouldn’t be left lying around.

And make sure there are no exposed cords or wires that your dog could chew. It could prove fatal if it’s a live cord.

3. Don’t give your dog old shirts or shoes to chew. Your dog can’t differentiate between what is an unwanted shirt or blouse and what is your expensive dress shirt or silk blouse.

4. Give your dog safe chew toys and safe treats to chew on and keep him occupied when you’re not around.

5. Don’t reprimand your dog if you don’t catch it in the act of chewing something. Dogs don’t remember what they did after about 10 seconds. Reprimanding your dog when you discover something has been chewed while you were at work during the day will have no effect on changing your dog’s behavior.

Your dog simply won’t understand what it is being reprimanded for and will associate your coming home with being reprimanded.

Instead, correct your dog’s behavior as soon as you see it chewing something it shouldn’t.

6. Find a play pal or pet sitter to keep your dog company if you’re away all day. Many dogs get lonely when their owners aren’t around and suffer separation anxiety which causes them to chew things.
