Dog Chewing - Dog Chewing Problems

One common dog behavior problem is dog chewing. This is normal behavior for puppies, especially when they are teething. And deaf dogs are also prone to chewing.

But dog chewing behavior can be destructive. Your furniture, your clothes, your expensive shoes, your carpet, your magazines, and other items are all targets for dog chewing. (And for your puppy or dog’s safety, make sure electrical cords are properly covered to avoid fatal accidents from your dog chewing a “live” cord.)

Dog chewing can be a sign of an anxious dog that is suffering from dog separation anxiety.

In this case, you would use dog behavior training to deal with dog separation anxiety.

Chewing can also be learned behavior where a dog owner gives the puppy or dog an old shoe or shirt to chew on.

Since your puppy or dog doesn’t know the difference between something that’s new and something that’s old, your new wardrobe or shoe collection becomes vulnerable to a dog that displays chewing behavior.

How to Stop Dog Chewing Problems

One way to stop a dog from chewing is to substitute items the dog is chewing. For example, if you see your puppy or dog chewing on something it shouldn’t, give it a favorite toy or safe dog chew to chew on instead. (Make sure the toy or chew doesn’t pose a choking hazard.)

Dog chewing can also be a sign that your dog isn’t getting enough exercise and has too much energy. Releasing that energy through walking can burn off excess energy and make your dog more relaxed.
