How to Stop a Dog from Barking

Dogs bark for many reasons: as a greeting, as a sign of fear or anger, as a warning to strangers, as a warning of danger to its owner, to ask for something, and to get attention.

Barking can also be due to boredom or dog separation anxiety.

Some breeds like Hounds, Chihuahuas, and Beagles are natural barkers.

Keep in mind that if your dog is agitated while it is barking, it could be warning you of danger or an intruder.

While barking is normal with today’s dog breeds, it can be excessive and even a nuisance - such as when a dog barks at strangers or visitors to your home or when a dog barks for long periods of time when no-one is home.

In these situations, barking becomes a dog behavior problem that can be addressed with dog behavior training.

With dog behavior training, you reward your dog with praise and healthy treats when it is quiet.

For example, if a visitor knocks on your front door and your dog starts barking, you would reward it with treats and praise when it stops barking after you command it to be quiet.

Your dog obedience training would progress to the point where your dog would stop barking on command without needing treats or praise.
