Dog Aggression Behavior - Food Aggression

There are many kinds of dog aggression behavior. Dog aggression can be misplaced, such as in the case of certain dog breeds that have a protective instinct and become overly protective.

Other forms of dog aggression can result from a number of causes including illness, reaction to medication, inherited defects, dog allergies, and owner abuse or neglect.

In this article, we’ll talk about food or feeding aggression.

Dog Food Aggression and Feeding Aggression

In food aggression a dog displays its dominance and possessiveness by guarding its food.

Sometimes food aggression is a learned behavior. But it can also be instinctive behavior.

The dog might growl, bare its teeth, or even bite someone who comes too close to its food or who tries to take its food away from it.

Sometimes, a dog might even bite the owner’s hand as the owner is placing the food bowl on the floor. In this situation, the owner might not be seen as the “pack leader” by the dog.

Dog feeding aggression can be dangerous especially if someone, including young children, unknowingly or inadvertently comes near the dog during feeding time.

Any type of dog aggression behavior, including food aggression, should not be allowed to escalate and should be corrected with the advice of a professional dog trainer using dog behavior training.
